When I asked friends what they wanted to read about, TV is one of the things people asked about. I love TV. Sometimes I love good TV, sometimes I love bad TV. When I say bad I mean terrible teenage drama foolishness. I’m just going to list some of my favorites from this year that Ben and I have enjoyed. **There may be some spoilery type things in this one so if you aren’t caught up look away!**
1. Doctor Who
I was thrilled with the new Doctor played by Jodie Whittaker. There were lots of fun adventures. The biggest complaints I heard about this new season was that there wasn’t a continuous plot like in previous seasons like there wasn’t one huge villain throughout. I personally liked the simplicity this season brought. I’m sure we will see more of Jodie and her “fam” in the New Year and maybe the fans will get their big bad guy then. As for me, I’ll hopefully be cosplaying the Doctor soon.
“I’ll be fine, in the end, hopefully. Well, I have to be, because you guys need help, and if there’s one thing I’m certain of, when people need help, I never refuse. Right? This is gonna be fun.” -13’th Doctor
This is one I get a lot of grief for. I don’t care if it’s “stupid” and “unfollowable teen drama”. I love it. I loved the Archie comics ever since I could read a full sentence and I love being able to see them as an adult with darker undertones. Yes, some (most according to Ben) of it is cheesy. I still love it. The thing I love about this season is that there seem to be paranormal aspects to the world now. That might just be hallucinogenic BUT **SPOILERS** we do know that Riverdale is in the same world as Sabrina’s Greendale so for me anything is possible. And a friendly reminder, Ben and I totally rocked Betty and Jughead for Halloween this year:
3. Bob’s Burgers
Bob’s Burgers is something I watched with my parents back in the day. I haven’t stopped watching since. It reminds me of my family a lot. All the women in my family remind me of Linda, especially my Mom and sister. Louise reminds me of a younger me and a current Danielle. Tina always makes me laugh. I adore Bob. They’re all just relatable and it’s nice to laugh every once in a while. I definitely have some favorite episodes: “Crawl Space”, “Sexy Dance Fighting”, “Art Crawl”, all the Thanksgiving episodes. This season I really liked “Just One of the Boyz 4 Now for Now” and “Bobby Driver”.
“You don’t want to mess with my sister. She’ll wear down your self-esteem over a period of years.” -Tina Belcher
4. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Netflix originals seem to be killin’ it this year. When I heard about this coming out I was expecting the silly and fun Sabrina I used to watch as a kid. NOT THE CASE. This Sabrina is dark. It’s from the same people who make Riverdale which is really cool and like I said earlier, is in the same world as Riverdale. There is even some crossover that happens if you pay attention. Aunt Hilda is definitely my favorite character. I love to hate Harvey. I want him to just get over himself and love Sabrina. They’ve been renewed for parts 2-4 so I’m looking forward to more. But the best thing? Salem got to walk the red carpet.
5. Gravity Falls
This was probably our go-to show for when we were bored this year. The story is awesome and I was so sad when it was over. Luckily, Alex Hirsch the creator of Gravity Falls will be writing for Netflix in the New Year. I love all the artwork and backgrounds in this one. I can’t wait to see the new stories and worlds Alex creates.
“You can’t force someone to love you. The best you can do is strive to be someone worthy of loving.” – Dipper
6. Killing Eve
We haven’t finished this one yet but so far I love it. Here’s the description:
Eve’s life as a spy is not adding up to what she had hoped it would be when she started. She is a bored, very smart, MI5 security officer who is very desk-bound. Villanelle is a very talented killer, mercurial in mood, who clings to the luxuries of her job. Eve and Villanelle go head to head in a fierce game of cat and mouse, each woman equally obsessed with the other as Eve is tasked with hunting down the psychopathic assassin.
It’s very good so far, I can’t wait to see how it ends and then I’m sure I’ll be frustrated and want more but have to wait until season 2.
Also, there’s a scene where Villanelle gets into a suitcase and I love it, definitely my favorite sociopath.
7. Crickey! It’s the Irwins!
How can you not love the Irwins? They have the most beautiful stories and hearts. I made Ben pinky promise me to take me to the Australian zoo before I die. I love learning about all the animals and how they take care of them. If you haven’t seen Robert on Jimmy Fallon you should definitely check it out it’s awesome.
This was a good one but short. Ben and I finished it in like a week. I’m looking forward to more coming out next year. It was described as the Simpsons meets Game of Thrones. It’s not that dark, but it is a little bit. I like dark cartoons what can I say. I think it mostly reminds me of Futurama if I had to compare it to something. I think it would be pretty simple to cosplay Bean sometime, definitely an option.
9. New Girl
I started watching New Girl a few years ago then forgot about it. I restarted it and it’s great for when I just want something to make me laugh. Winston and Ferguson are my favorite characters. I think I’m starting to get close to the end, I have a bad habit of starting shows and not finishing them (Bates Motel). Hopefully, I can finish this one.
This show was so great. Imaginative. Jonah Hill and Emma Stone are great. It’s a great idea for how to show mental illness. It’s a little confusing but if you stick it out until the end it’s worth it.
I know there’s a few more I missed but that is a short list for you all 🙂 What did you watch this year? What are you looking forward to next year?
